- A nail or screw in the tread. The most common flat, and the most fixable.
- A slow leak. The tire keeps losing air over a day or two. Often a small puncture or a leaking valve stem.
- A small hole, 1/4 inch or less. About the width of a pencil.
Flats that cannot be repaired
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association sets the rules that tire shops follow. A bad repair can fail at highway speed.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Hole in the sidewall or the shoulder of the tire | No repair. The tire has to be replaced. |
| Hole bigger than 1/4 inch | No repair. |
| Two holes close enough that the repairs would overlap | No repair. |
| You drove on it while it was flat | It has to be checked inside. Michelin says even a short drive on a flat can ruin a tire from the inside. |
If your tire is on this list, the choices are putting your spare on or having a new tire brought to you. Tell us what you see and we will talk through which one fits.
Plug, patch, or both? Ask.
There are two kinds of flat repair, and you should know which one you are getting.
The lasting repair is a plug and a patch together. The tire comes off the wheel so the inside can be checked, and the hole is sealed from the inside. The tire makers' group says plainly that a plug alone is not an acceptable repair.
A plug pushed in from the outside is faster and gets you moving. It is a short-term fix. Ask the tech which repair you are getting. If it is the quick one, have a tire shop finish the repair soon. More in tire plug vs patch.
Why people call instead of driving on it
Driving on a flat, even slowly, can turn a cheap repair into a new tire and sometimes a new wheel. And changing a tire on the shoulder of a busy road is dangerous. More than 2,100 people were killed outside disabled vehicles on U.S. roadsides from 2019 to 2023. If you are in a bad spot, stay safe first and call for help. In Chicago? What it costs
The price depends on the repair, your tire, the time of day and how far the tech has to drive. Ask for the full price on the phone before you agree to anything. If the price changes when the tech sees the tire, you should hear that before any work starts.
