Jump start and battery

Jump start service and mobile battery replacement

You turn the key and get a click, a slow groan, or nothing. Call us. We check for a local pro who can come give you a jump. If the battery will not hold a charge, ask about a new battery brought to you and put in.

Tell us what happens when you try to start it. A fast clicking, one click, a slow crank, or dead silence. It helps us send the right help.

A jump, or a new battery?

A jump gets you going when a good battery ran down. You left the lights on, or the car sat for weeks. A jump will not fix a battery that is worn out.

AAA says most car batteries last three to five years. Closer to three in hot places, five or more where it is cool. If yours is in that range and the car has been slow to start, it is probably time for a new one.

When it is not the battery

A jump start or a new battery will not fix a bad alternator or a bad starter. If the car starts with a jump and dies again soon after, or the dash lights up and the engine does nothing, tell us. If it sounds like one of those on the phone, we say so before anyone is sent. Our guide helps you tell them apart: why won't my car start?

One safety note. If the battery case is swollen, cracked or leaking, do not try to jump it.

Hybrids, electric cars and newer cars

They have a small 12-volt battery too, and it can go flat. But the jump points and the steps can be different, and the owner's manual has the last word. Tell us what you drive when you call.

After the jump

Keep the engine running for at least 30 minutes so the battery can take a charge. Then get the battery tested. A parts store or a repair shop can do it. If it fails the test, replace it before it leaves you stuck again.

What it costs

A jump is a quick job. A battery replacement costs more because you are buying the battery. Ask for the full price on the phone before you agree to anything.
